Rainy day women #12 and 35

This song was playing in my mind yesterday while I was listening to my friend’s stories about recent racist attacks on her and her friends in Melbourne. Some were thrown eggs and broken glasses at. Some were stabbed on the way home. My friend was chased and kicked in front of her door. It is [...]

'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. [...]

One art (Elizabeth Bishop)

One art
Elizabeth Bishop

The art of losing isn’t hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn’t hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it [...]

Funeral blues

Funeral blues
W.H. Auden

2011-06-19 update: I tried the previous trick in Hanoi this week but it no longer works. However, Tor Brower Bundle (torproject.org) works perfectly fine. Tor also works for Android and jailbreak iPhone (http://sid77.slackware.it/iphone). Another reason to jailbreak iPhone or move to Android phones :)

I heard that they’re banning Facebook in Vietnam, probably to save time [...]

To bear or not to bear

I’ve been thinking about death for the last 2 years. It’s not that i want to end my life. It’s just that i’ve started pondering on having a child.

It’s typical in our country that within a few months after marriage, people start asking you about kids: some things (very intrusive in Western culture but pretty [...]

The maps on the walls

On the walls of my 2 m2 cubicle, there are 3 maps.

The first one, on the back wall, is a map of my country, a land of 331,210 km2 and 3,444 km coastline. They said that if sea level rise by 5 m, most of its agriculture regions will be under the sea, affect 35% [...]
