Funeral blues

Funeral blues
W.H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic [...]

The hurt locker (2008): suck

We had a great lunch with friends in Marché 313@somerset, a long and fun cafe-then-swim-wear-shopping afternoon, a great night swim with friends. Then “The hurt locker” spoiled the day.

It just sucks. The first 5-10 minutes made me almost throw up with all of their camera shakes and totally random in-and-out zooms. District 9 uses similar headache [...]

Short film: Father and daugher

One of my favorite short films:”Father And Daughter” by Michael Dudok de Wit (Oscar 2000 for Best Animated Short Film & 54th BAFTA winner for Best Short Animation)

Avatar (2009)

I didn’t expect much from “Avatar“. Its trailer is not impressive; its theme song is not that great; and James Cameron’s films (Terminator, Titanic, etc.), except “The Abyss“, are not my favorites. So it’s a nice surprise indeed.

The graphic, in 3D, is wonderful. It’s true that they go to the edge of visual graphics in this [...]

Home (2009): a must see

Very beautiful documentary (by Yann Arthus-Bertrand), summarized the history of life on earth, what we are doing and what’s next (some related graphs from BBC). It’s amazing how they can condense and arrange such amount of scientific, environmental, and social knowledge into 120 minutes. You must see it (it’s better in HD).

…Life, a miracle in the [...]

P.S. I love you

I’ve been having a runny nose for nearly a week now, so probably I’m in a sissy mode. In a short note, Shortcut to happiness and P.S. I love you are really nice movies for a weekend or two.

The first movie is nice. Classic story about selling your soul for fame and glory. But always [...]

Perhaps love

Life is like a film
Each of us is the lead in our own film
Some might assume he is also the co-lead in someone else’s film
But in fact, his role is merely supporting
Or just a bit part
Or worse…
his scenes could have been edited out
He just doesn’t know it

Like the mother and child here
The girl will certainly [...]

Juno (2007)

The trumpet of the swan (E.B. White)

Last year, i read “The elements of style“, a book on how to write concisely. It was written by William Strunk Jr. (a professor in Cornell University), then revised by E.B. White. And it’s the best book about writing I’ve ever read. At the time, i didn’t know who White was.

Last year, we watched “Charlotte’s [...]
